Technical Challenge: Action, adventure, challenges to overcome! See the lights flashing and listen to the buzzers and bells as your team brings a pinball game to life! Hone your pinball skills and aim for the high score when you try this year’s Technical Challenge!
Design and build a pinball system through which a pinball moves and interacts with 3 machine modules.
During the Presentation, move the pinball through the pinball system for as long as possible.
Create and present an action/adventure story about a hero who goes on an extraordinary mission.
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
Engineering Challenge: It’s a bird, it’s a plane…no…it’s a beanbag! Who can predict how far the beanbag will fly or where it will come to rest? In this season’s Engineering Challenge, you will test your accuracy as you launch beanbags using a launching device and tell a story about what happens when things do not go exactly as planned.
Design and build a modular device that will be assembled and then tested in two different configurations during the Presentation.
Complete launch tests to test how far and how accurately your modular device can launch a bean bag in each configuration.
Transform the modular device from one configuration to the other.
Create and present a story in which everything is going according to plan until a catalyst occurs.
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
Scientific Challenge: A broken jar, a bit of stone—the remains of the past are all around us. Have you ever wondered what those things might have been used for or what they meant to the people who made them? What archaeological mysteries will be revealed in this year’s Scientific Challenge?
Create and present a story about a character whose discovery of an artifact leads to a finding.
Include an archaeological investigation that contributes to the finding.
Design and create a puppet that will portray a character from the past.
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
Fine Arts: Art has the power to move us or stop us in our tracks. In this year’s Fine Arts Challenge, you will bring a work of visual art to life and create your very own piece of kinetic art. What work of art will inspire you?
Create and present a story inspired by a work of visual art.
Include a static character and a dynamic character in the story.
Reimagine the work of visual art as performance art and include the reimagined art in the Presentation.
Design and create one piece of kinetic art that uses technical methods to create movement.
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
Improvisational: Sometimes less is more, or more is less…Your team will use your improv skills to create a 2-act skit, complete with a costume created on the spot! An intensifier will tell your team whether you’ll maximize or minimize elements of your skit in the second act. Find out how things will change with the toss of a coin in this year’s Improvisational Challenge!
Create and present a 2-act improvisational skit based on a scenario.
Incorporate a stock character into the skit.
Research costume design and use a costume design kit to create a costume.
Use an intensifier to minimize or maximize the scenario, stock character, and costume.
Service Learning: Your team will dive into a world of fantasy in this year’s Service Learning Challenge. Use a map to guide you on your quest, but beware of the danger that awaits! What will you seek? Fame? Fortune? Or to make the world a better place? The quest is about to begin!
Identify, design, carry out, and evaluate a project that addresses a need in a real community.
Create and present a fantasy story about a character who goes on a quest.
Design and create a fantasy map that uses technical methods to represent location information from the story.
Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
Early Learning: From the busy coral reef, to the inky depths of the midnight zone, to the shallows of a lake bed, there are lots of amazing underwater habitats to visit. Where might underwater creatures go for a vacation? Come explore life under the sea in this season’s Early Learning Challenge!
Research underwater habitats.
Create and present a play about a group of underwater creatures who go on vacation to an underwater habitat.
Design and build a model of a landmark the underwater creatures visit.
Create scenery to show the underwater habitat.
Create and present one Team Choice Element that shows off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.

Welcome back to my experience at the Destination Imagination Global Finals 2023! On day three of this awe-inspiring event, I had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable talent and creativity showcased in the Fine Arts Challenge competition and the electrifying Box n' Ballers Bash in the street. Let's delve into the unforgettable moments that unfolded on this exhilarating day.
Fine Arts Challenge: Unleashing Imagination
The Fine Arts Challenge proved to be an exceptional showcase of talent and imagination. Teams brought to life a new main character inspired by a well-known story, creating and presenting a flipped tale that left the audience spellbound. The incorporation of literary devices added depth and creativity to their presentations, captivating the viewers with their storytelling prowess.
One team, in particular, caught my attention with their ingenious use of theatrical techniques. They skillfully maneuvered the audience's focus from one portion of the Presentation Area to another, seamlessly transitioning between scenes and captivating the audience's attention throughout. It was a masterclass in stagecraft and demonstrated the teams' meticulous attention to detail.
But the surprises didn't stop there! The teams' creativity extended beyond the performances. I was astounded by their ability to design and build scenery that underwent a scenery flip. Watching a seemingly ordinary set transform into an entirely new environment was nothing short of magical. The teams' dedication and craftsmanship were evident in every aspect of their presentations.
In addition to the required elements, the teams took the opportunity to showcase their individuality through two Team Choice Elements. These elements highlighted the teams' interests, skills, areas of strength, and unique talents. It was a joy to witness the diverse array of talents on display, from mesmerizing dance routines to awe-inspiring visual artistry and musical performances. The teams truly shone as they expressed their passions in their own creative and innovative ways
Box n' Ballers Bash in the Street
That evening, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Box n' Ballers Bash in the street. The surroundings buzzed with excitement as participants and spectators alike marveled at the array of dazzling performances and interactive activities.
The creativity and imagination displayed in the duct tape fashion show were truly extraordinary. Participants transformed rolls of adhesive wonder into incredible outfits that pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion. The runway came alive with unique designs and artistic flair, leaving everyone inspired by the limitless possibilities of this unconventional medium.
The bash also featured mesmerizing balloon artists, who skillfully twisted and shaped balloons into elaborate sculptures and creations that left the spectators in awe. Stilt walkers added a touch of grandeur and playfulness as they towered over the crowd, demonstrating their exceptional balance and coordination. The hula hoop artists wowed the audience with their dazzling skills, effortlessly spinning and twirling their hoops in mesmerizing patterns. And the fire spinners added a touch of thrill and excitement with their mesmerizing displays of fire manipulation.
Day three at the Destination Imagination Global Finals 2023 proved to be an extraordinary celebration of artistic brilliance and street entertainment. The Fine Arts Challenge showcased the teams' ability to craft epic tales and blend science with creativity, while the Box n' Ballers Bash in the street enthralled us with a dynamic fusion of talent and spectacle.

Welcome back, DI enthusiasts! Today, I am thrilled to share with you the exhilarating experiences I had on the second day of the Destination Imagination Global Finals 2023. As part of the new Affiliate Director Tour, DIHQ took us behind the scenes, providing us with an exclusive glimpse into the inner workings of the tournament. From awe-inspiring performances to creative problem-solving, this day was a true testament to the ingenuity and passion of DI participants.
The Affiliate Director Tour:
Our journey began with DIHQ guiding us through the prop area, where teams meticulously prepared their props for their respective challenges. It was fascinating to witness the attention to detail and the impressive craftsmanship that went into creating these eye-catching visuals. From larger-than-life structures to intricate set designs, the prop area showcased the dedication and creativity of the participating teams.
Next, we had the opportunity to observe the team check-in process conducted by the appraisers. The appraisers diligently reviewed each team's documentation, ensuring that they adhered to the rules and regulations. It was inspiring to see the professionalism and commitment of the appraisers, who played a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and fairness of the competition.
Exhilarating Performance: Thrill Ride Engineering Challenge:
Following the behind-the-scenes tour, we were treated to an extraordinary performance by a Texas team participating in the Thrill Ride Engineering challenge. The team's captivating performance brought to life an adrenaline-pumping adventure, showcasing their engineering prowess and creative storytelling skills. The level of innovation and attention to detail was simply mind-blowing, leaving the audience in awe of their ingenuity.
Entertaining Improvisational Team:
After being enthralled by the Thrill Ride Engineering challenge, I had the pleasure of witnessing an entertaining improvisational performance by a team from California. The team's quick thinking, wit, and ability to adapt to unexpected scenarios were truly impressive. Their comedic timing, teamwork, and sheer creativity had the audience in stitches, highlighting the importance of improvisation and collaboration in problem-solving.
Service Learning Challenges:
As the day continued, I had the privilege of watching two powerful Service Learning challenge performances. An Ohio elementary level team took us on a thrilling journey where they heroically saved a city from a raging lava disaster. Their dedication to making a positive impact through their project was evident in every aspect of their performance, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
In another Service Learning challenge performance, a senior team from China demonstrated the transformative power of creativity by focusing on preventing verbal violence. Their stunning costumes and thought-provoking storyline showcased the profound impact that DI projects can have in addressing real-world issues. It was a testament to the power of imagination and collaboration in creating positive change.
These experiences have reinforced my belief in the transformative power of Destination Imagination. The dedication, teamwork, and out-of-the-box thinking exhibited by the participants serve as a reminder of the unlimited potential within each of us. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this extraordinary event, and I look forward to continuing to support and expand the DI program in Georgia, empowering young minds to reach new heights of creativity and collaboration.
